The professor, Peter Marcuse was born on November 13, 1928, in Berlin, Germany. Later he immigrated to the US in 1933 at the beginning of the Third Reich. He took a JD from Yale Law School in 1952 and then took PhD from UC Berkeley in City and also Regional Planning in 1972.

He chose to become a lawyer and then, he began his career as a lawyer in New Haven and Waterbury, Connecticut. At the place, he served on the Board of Alderman and participated in the Freedom Summer in Mississippi in 1964. After completing his PhD, he became a professor of Urban planning at UCLA from 1972 at Columbia University.
